Why does my unit rate depend on where I live?

Your electricity and gas unit rates are not the same across the UK. They vary because the cost of maintaining and operating the gas pipes and electricity wires that connect your property to the national networks differs by region.

There are 14 separate electricity distribution network operators (DNOs) and gas distribution networks across Great Britain, each covering a specific geographic area. Each operator charges energy suppliers a different amount to use their network. Suppliers pass these regional network costs on to customers through slightly different unit rates and standing charges.

The Ofgem price cap accounts for this by setting region-specific maximum rates rather than a single national rate. The headline annual bill figure (£1,862 from July 2026) is a national average based on Ofgem's typical consumption values -- your actual bill will differ depending on your region and your usage.

How to use these rates

Check your bill is correct

Compare the unit rate on your latest bill against the rate shown for your region. If your rate is significantly above the regional cap rate, you may be overpaying. Contact your supplier to confirm which tariff you are on.

Compare tariffs accurately

When comparing tariffs, use the regional rate as a baseline. Any fixed tariff priced below your regional cap rate represents a potential saving. Use the annual bill estimator at Utility Matchmaker to model the difference.

Understand your standing charge

Standing charges are listed in the table alongside unit rates. They apply every day regardless of usage. Use the standing charge calculator to see what proportion of your annual bill is fixed versus variable.
